Minami-Awaji City, located across the Naruto Straits, and Naruto City, Tokushima Prefecture, collaborated to unveil "Uzunosachi Gourmet," which emits the charm of local food, at the Uzunooka Onaruto Bridge Memorial Hall in Fukurauchi, Minami-Awaji City. A total of 39 restaurants from both cities presented "Uzunosachi Gourmet" and "Cup-in Gourmet" menus that elaborated on their ideas. The first 35 "Uzunomisachi Meisters" were also announced. (The first 35 people were appointed as "Uzunomisachi Meisters".)
The project was launched in 2022 by the two cities to increase the number of tourists and people interacting with each other by taking advantage of the rich food ingredients nurtured by the Uzushio Current. The cup-in gourmet food sold more than 100,000 servings in one year. The unveiling event was held on February 18, and was attended by staff from lodging facilities and restaurants in both cities. French cuisine and kaiseki dishes that made use of ingredients such as Thai fish, onions, and lotus root were presented. The cup-in gourmet dishes included Awaji beef skewers and Naruto kintoki parfaits.
The Uzunosachi Meister program was newly established to nurture local "food evangelists," and 35 chefs and others passed the certification exam in January. Noriko Onishi, 35, manager of the Hotel New Awaji Plaza Awaji Island, said, "The area around the straits is rich not only in seafood but also in mountain foods. I would be happy if the two cities could promote each other and attract more tourists and inbounds (visitors to Japan) to come and go.
