From ancient times until the Heian period, Awaji Island was called Miketsukuni (the land of food), where food was offered to the Imperial Court. The plankton-rich fishing grounds near the Naruto Straits nurture a rich harvest of seafood, including the famous pike conger and red sea urchin in summer, back-season Spanish mackerel in autumn, and Awaji Island 3-year torafugu and dried seaweed in winter.
